Excessive saliva production, called hypersalivation or sialorrhea, happens when your salivary glands make too much saliva. This can lead to drooling or constantly feeling like you need to spit.
Your mouth normally makes about 1 liter of saliva daily. This keeps your mouth moist, helps digest food, and protects teeth. But sometimes, your brain signals your salivary glands to produce too much.
Several factors can trigger hypersalivation:
Many people think hypersalivation is always serious. But it's often temporary and harmless. For example, morning drool is normal because saliva production increases while you sleep.
If drooling persists without an obvious cause, consult a doctor. Chronic hypersalivation could signal an underlying condition needing treatment. Medications, therapy, or surgery sometimes help.
I once had a patient who thought their excessive salivation was due to anxiety. Tests revealed acid reflux was the real cause. Treating the reflux resolved the issue.
