After gym muscle pain, also called delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), is the stiffness or tenderness felt 24-72 hours after intense exercise. It occurs when muscles repair microscopic damage from exertion.
DOMS differs from acute pain during exercise. It peaks 24-48 hours post-workout and fades within 72 hours. The pain results from microtears in muscle fibers, inflammation, and metabolic waste buildup. While uncomfortable, DOMS indicates muscle adaptation and growth.
| Type | Timing | Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Acute Soreness | During/immediately after exercise | Lactic acid buildup |
| Delayed Onset (DOMS) | 24-72 hours post-workout | Microtears in muscle fibers |
| Chronic Pain | Persistent beyond 72 hours | Overuse or injury |
Severe or persistent pain may signal injury. If swelling, sharp pain, or limited mobility occur, see a healthcare provider. DOMS should fade within 72 hours; lasting pain requires evaluation.
