The black and white pride flag represents LGBTQ+ history and protest. It consists of horizontal stripes alternating between black and white, with no additional colors or symbols.
The black and white pride flag emerged in the early 2000s as a symbol of protest and remembrance within the LGBTQ+ community. The black stripe represents those lost to hate crimes, HIV/AIDS, suicide, and other causes. The white stripe signifies hope for the future and living LGBTQ+ people.
The most common design features six equal horizontal stripes: three black and three white. Some variations include additional elements, such as a pink triangle or the Lambda symbol, to further emphasize activism and solidarity.
For example, a protest flag used during the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting memorials included a black and white design with the words "Orlando We Will Never Forget" printed in the center.
Another misconception is that the black and white flag is exclusively for asexual individuals. While the asexual pride flag does include a black stripe, it also features gray, white, and purple. The black and white flag is distinct and serves a different purpose.
The black and white pride flag is often displayed at memorials, protests, and events that honor LGBTQ+ history. It serves as a useful reminder of the ongoing struggle for equality and the importance of remembering those who have been lost.
For instance, during Pride Month, many communities raise both the rainbow flag and the black and white flag side by side to represent both celebration and remembrance.
The black and white pride flag stands as a solemn and useful symbol within the LGBTQ+ community. Its stark design and profound message make it a important part of the broader mix of pride flags, each serving unique purposes and audiences.
